Remco Vermeulen found a privilege escalation bug in Western Digital’s My Cloud devices, which he said allows an attacker to bypass the admin password on the drive, gaining “complete control” over the user’s data.


Local network access using Samba (SMB) does not include access using the Mobile, Web or WD Discovery Desktop app.Local network access must be enabled by each individual guest user.The Device Owner CANNOT enable local network access for guest users.For more information on finding the Hostname or IP address of your My Cloud Home, please refer to Answer ID 50626: Instructions to Enable Local Network Access on a My Cloud Home, My Cloud Home Duo and SanDisk ibi without Cloud Services. If connection type continues to display Relay or Direct, access the dashboard using the Hostname or IP address of My Cloud Home.

If connection type didn't change, reboot your PC or macOS. Refresh the browser to see if the connection type has changed to local.

Full setup or service recovery will be needed to enable local network access for devices that have been newly purchased of system erased to factory settings. Enter and create a local Samba (SMB) user name.Toggle local network access from the default setting of Off to On.

If Local Network Access had previously been configured on the same device, Two-Factor Account (2FA) verification is not required.
