Remco Vermeulen found a privilege escalation bug in Western Digital’s My Cloud devices, which he said allows an attacker to bypass the admin password on the drive, gaining “complete control” over the user’s data.

    Local network access using Samba (SMB) does not include access using the Mobile, Web or WD Discovery Desktop app.Local network access must be enabled by each individual guest user.The Device Owner CANNOT enable local network access for guest users.For more information on finding the Hostname or IP address of your My Cloud Home, please refer to Answer ID 50626: Instructions to Enable Local Network Access on a My Cloud Home, My Cloud Home Duo and SanDisk ibi without Cloud Services. If connection type continues to display Relay or Direct, access the dashboard using the Hostname or IP address of My Cloud Home.

  • Enter the Two-Factor Account (2FA) verification code provided in the email message into the box named: Enter the code.
  • Return to the Verify your Identity Local Network Access Dashboard page in the web browser.
  • Copy the Two-Factor Account (2FA) verification code.
  • The account verification code email will come from from If the verification code email is not found in your Inbox, please check the Junk and Spam folders.
  • Check the inbox of the email account used to access the device for the Two-Factor Account (2FA) verification code from Western Digital.

    If Local Network Access had previously been configured on the same device, Two-Factor Account (2FA) verification is not required.

  • Click Sign In to access the Dashboard with your Western Digital Account.
  • Under Current Storage select the My Cloud Home device.
  • Click the Settings menu option on the left hand side.
